I've been everywhere man!
Las Vegas, Nevada - Phoenix, Arizona - Lordsburg, New Mexico - El Paso, Texas - San Antonio, Texas...

If you want only happy news, scroll down until you see this *****

Warning: Reading beyond this point may offend and distress some viewers. (It did to me!)

Itinerary of 36hours on a Greyhound bus:

Get squished next to someone chatty
They leave and finally you can lie down on two seats
Get sore knees from curling up
Wake up frequently with stops
Wait in layover for 2 hours
Sit on sleeping bag and then floor - anything to get horizontal with legs stretched out
Get on new bus next to someone circumfrancely challenged (overweight - for those who didn't understand the euphamism)
Get comfortable
Have your neighbour sit on your leg
Be patient for 5 minutes then wiggle enough so she gets the message and moves back to her side
Put on neck pillow and eye mask and blanket. Then don't fall asleep because because the guy behind you is snoring really loud.
Breathe deeply
Have kids in front of you kick your legs like its a game
More deep breaths
The bus stops for a break
Get back on bus and try to fall asleep before phlegm guy starts up again
Get 20mins sleep before you get woken up by snoring guy and neighbour sitting on your leg again

Times by 36 (number of hours)

San Antonio, Texas - Wednesday 23rd August 3pm

Got 15 minutes of free internet - so here goes...

San Antonio is beautiful. The architecture is lovely, a cross between southern and spanish. The have a path that follows the river called Riverwalk. It's below street level and is made with limestone, trees and lovely shrubs. It would be awesome to chuck an inflatable mattress on it and float from one side of the city to the other.
I had my first healthy meal since I got to America. I think Greyhound has shares in McDonalds cause its the only place they stop. It was a "small" salad that was on a dinner plate, heaped and overflowing. The saying is true. Everything is bigger in Texas. I even ordered a quiche with muchrooms in it (and ate the whole lot mum!!) I am that hard up for vegetables. I have decided to fly to Savannah instead of busing it. I will meet Jess Lang on Friday and spend two days with her. She has her computer so I'll get her to teach me how to upload photos to blogs.
I'm going to the Alamo tomorrow - I'll keep you posted.

Love Kym

  • Hi Kym

Ahhh, the joys of public transport! Having experienced a bus 'sandwhich' or two myself you definately have my sympthy! Still, it makes for entertaining reading for us back home. he he he 8 )

San Antonio sounds beautiful and I bet it seemed like paradise after that bus trip!

  • Hi Baby - so you're not keen on public transport hey? Or is it just bus trips with some particular companions. You have to hope they aren't following you up to New York! Glad you decided to fly to Savannah - it means you won't see as much but at least it will rest you up ready for the next disturbed sleep part of your trip!!! Maybe we should re-title your 'around the world in 70 days' blog to 'diary of a girl who didn't get much sleep on her world tour'!!! Is texas hot? Isn't Fulsom Prison in San Antonio? I bet you're singing Johnny Cash as I write this! Can't wait to hear about Savannah and if you get to see lightning bugs! Love you and happy travelling.

  • Hi Kym,

I can definately relate to what you are saying, the actual travelling part of travelling (if you know what I mean) can be tiresome to say the least but if everything went smoothly you wouldn't have such good stories to tell.

Enjoy catching up with your parents and friends. The U.S. sounds amazing and you do write VERY well.

  • Hi Chicky,
I finally caught up with you. (Dad only just sent your blog address). For the most part you sound like you are having an experience of a lifetime, limited sleep and all. And I sure do like reading what you write, I will always be a devoted fan of you skill with words. Love you heaps. Thanks for the updates they're much more exciting than doing gardening and getting plants stolen from your front yard. Have you seen any hunky texas rangers in your travel like we read about in those novels...? Where have all the cowboys gone anyway!??? LOL. Love you, stay safe, keep having enough fun for the both of us.
